In 2008, the country underwent a national change for mortgage licensing, with a new licensing body being created called the National Mortgage Licensing System, or NMLS licensing.
The goal for NMLS licensing is to insure that all loan officers and mortgage originators are equally educated and transparent to consumers, and to insure that everyone goes through the same mortgage licensing education.
What NMLS Loan Officer Licensing Requirements Accomplish
The SAFE Training Act establishes minimum standards for the registration and licensing of mortgage originators and loan officers, as well as requiring a national database to keep track of all these same people.
SAFE/NMLS training follows a format approved by the NMLS Licensing regulators and insures that anyone taking an approved SAFE training course and passing the national exam has met the minimum standards required by NMLS.
How To Fulfill Your NMLS Loan Officer Licensing Requirements
Once a loan officer or mortgage originator has completed the SAFE training and successfully passed the national exam, they are deemed eligible for SAFE/NMLS mortgage licensing. These individuals are then tracked through the NMLS system so consumers can readily understand who has been approved for SAFE mortgage licensing.
Special Note: In addition to the federally-mandated NMLS licensing requirements, each state may also have their own unique licensing requirements. Therefore, please check the NMLS / Loan Officer licensing requirements in your state from the links below.
